Metro Lighting merges traditional crafts with modern technologies to create personalized lighting solutions. Metro Lighting was founded on our core value of using lighting fixture design as a mode of self-expression, with a deep appreciation for the arts. With our extensive experience in the lighting industry, and our team of local artisans, we work with our customers to design beautiful and timeless solutions to enhance every space. We do all of this as sustainably as possible, moving towards zero waste.
Metro Lighting was founded in 1993 by Lawrence Grown to fulfill a need for architectural lighting-fixtures designed to compliment unique architectural environments. Lawrence earned his degree in 1990 from the acclaimed architecture program at the University of Cincinnati. His passions are for product development, sustainable design, and organic architecture. He is a charter member of Buy Local Berkeley, founder/Executive Director of the West Berkeley Design Loop, and founder of Commotion West Berkeley.
While we've continued to develop new fixtures, many of our long time customers and neighbors in the Bay Area appreciate our original designs that draw inspiration from our local Craftsman architecture. We have always had an appreciation for the lighting designs at Metro. When we had the opportunity to get pendant lighting for our kitchen remodel Metrowas first on our list. We are so thrilled with what they created for us. The 1927s California bungalows need scale in respect to the size of the homes from almost 100 years ago. So, our pendant lights fit in perfectly. The kitchen is not done yet and I will be updating photos when it's completed.

Wonderful shop that creates custom lighting. They partner with local glass blowers. The quality of the workmanship and the products for sale is unequaled. Our experience with our sales person was terrific and she was able to show us how the lighting would look by using a clever lighting table and high end light bulbs. When we were done making our selections we felt that the lighting fixtures we selected would really enhance our living/dining room.

We began working with Metro Lighting in May 2020, during the height of the pandemic, and all of the people involved were incredibly helpful and accommodating. Even though the storefront was closed, Cora guided us on a video tour of the entire showroom, answering all our questions, and allowing us to see the lights in action. We ended up ordering from the back catalog, and this was fully accommodated and encouraged as well.
Our lights are incredibly unique and absolutely beautiful, and the first thing people comment on when entering our kitchen. Thanks Cora and Metro for all your help, especially during these strange times!

So disappointing. I made an appointment online two days ago. I received a confirmation of my appointment and even a reminder early this morning. I drove over from Dublin, struggles to find parking, but all was good as I was on time. NO ONE FROM METRO LIGHTING SHOWED UP! I knocked and knocked and got the attention of a kindly gentleman who came to the door. He said no one was there and then he tried calling someone. Apparently there was no answer. What a disappointment.

I LOVE Metro lighting. Their selection is perfect for my modern Berkeley bungalow in that the lighting are both timeless and fresh. I bought my 'mobile' light about 10-years ago (attached photo) and love it as much today as I did yesteryear. The quality is solid and the design, well timeless. I also have a desk lamp made by Metro which is also a favorite.
I was in many time before these purchases and the customer service from the team was always been personable and knowledgable. I went to a few local lighting stores and felt like these were the same selections you can make on Amazon for cheaper. I went with Metro because I want timeless and enduring quality that matches my home investment. If you want unique and high-quality lighting I highly recommend Metro.

Metro lighting is a wonderful place to be. The custom fixtures they make are all affordable pieces of art that make any home special. We have used both their interior and exterior pieces including a very cool tequila bottle sconce- so cool! The owners and the team on the floor are super helpful and we would recommend their shop to anyone looking for high end lighting without the high end budget. You can't miss!

As an interior designer, I love working with Metro Lighting and consider them an integral resource to my projects. Their array of handcrafted fixtures and glass shades suits any aesthetic need I may have, and if you can envision it, they can make it! Metro is run by a wife and husband team, Christa and Lawrence, and they are as customer service oriented as you can be. We are fortunate to have them as an anchor in the West Berkeley Design Loop!

4 years ago I was renovating 2 bathrooms in my house. I had been looking at lighting and everything just looked hohum. I just happened to be in Berkeley to meet friends and after decided to look up lighting stores. After going to three or 4 stores the last on the list was Metro Lighting. With about 30 minutes to closing I showed the person working the pictures of the paint colors, tiles and samples for each bathroom.
The person made some suggestions for each and with my sister there to help I ordered the lighting. I always get compliments on the lights. They are simple but beautiful. And for custom lighting the price was very reasonable. Congratulations to Metro on 25 years of creating such beautiful art.

Lighting is an important part of any home. We knew early in our 30+ year relationship with our house that we wanted appropriate, well-designed fixtures that would make statements of their own while reflecting our aesthetic and our value system around "things" we surround ourselves with. Hand-crafted is very different than mass-produced & soul-less.
We are very fortunate to have Metro Lighting here in Berkeley. It is our go-to source and slowly but surely, we've collected a group of beauties that we enjoy everyday. Such nice people to work with, also.

Been meaning to post this for a while now. First up they have gorgeous light fixtures, shades, lamps, bulbs of every kind and the service is outstanding. We bought a beautiful, unique handmade floor lamp from here. A few months later a crack appeared. Just a random split in the leaf mosaic. Total freak thing. I wasn't sure what to do so I called them.
They were as puzzled as me but instead of just saying well, tough, that's your problem not ours, they happily re-ordered another lamp and took care of it every step of they way. I'll be back.

Metro Lighting is a gem of a lighting store and folks in Berkeley are lucky to have them. They offer truly unique, handmade, sustainable lamps, the kind that you will not find elsewhere. I am completely in love with their recycled bottle glass pendants and have my eye on the Bombay Sapphire one, to go above my kitchen table. They are a small local team of people, and chances are that you will speak with either owner Christa or Lawrence directly when you visit their shop. Their dedication to their craft shows in every detail, and customer service is a personable as it gets. Highly recommended!

Nice selection of artful and pricey light fixtures. The ones we liked were $700 and over $1100. We ultimately bought 3 fixtures for less than the less expensive one here. Are they as charming - no - but they are fine. We did buy two fixtures here in the past and were very happy with them. Would return for "that special lighting fixture."

We first met the crew at Metro Lighting 20 years ago when we remodeled. My husband went to every lighting store within a 45 minute drive from Oakland trying to find the perfect lights for our Mission craftsman house. Thank goodness we found Metro Lighting! We have loved our sconces and overhead lights with their beautiful unique designs and impeccable workmanship.
We wandered by last weekend and to our delight, the same impeccable customer service, outstanding design and fabrication, and reasonable pricing were still in evidence. It's great to know that craftsmanship like this still exists.

I am soooo happy to have found them! I have a rental property that I'm trying to bring back to its aesthetic period. Well, refirbing lights can be very expensive. Luckily the hard working techs at Metro Lighting were able to fix my cheapo lights to make them work (and safe). If you have a tough problem, or need some aesthetic inspiration, this is the place to go.

Over the years as we've remodeled our home we've purchased seven Metro Lighting fixtures, 3 exterior (Garage, Porch) and 4 interior (Kitchen, Bath, Entry); some custom ordered and some 'off-the shelf'. I have been extremely pleased with the quality and design of the fixtures, and also with the atttention paid to us as customers in the store. Metro Lighting is a superior business in my opinion.

We recently remodeled our house including replacing the lighting in our Craftsman bungalow. Once again, Metro Lighting helped us create a fresh look to match a transitional style, esp in the kitchen and dining room. Lawrence and staff at Metro Lighting are super stars. If you need to UL list a custom GU-24 fixture, these guys are your salvation. I am in the midst of a commercial restaurant project in San Francisco. We have a large custom light installation that requires 20 separate UL listed fixtures. And the city of SF just came in and made us change our standard sockets to GU-24. Lawrence figured out a way to UL list the fixtures while maintaining the exact design we had create. Pure magic! Metro Lighting is a wonderful destination for anyone who enjoys good quality and fantastic design in their lighting needs. I first visited them in 2001, when I purchased a floor lamp (oxidized brass and a beautiful amber glass shade). This lamp has held up incredibly well over the past 13 years and is always noticed by my guests. I recently purchased two desk lamps. Metro has the kind of style I like--inspired, classic design that is elegantly simple and clean.
The staff is wonderful and very patient. I will definitely return as my lighting needs increase over time! Be sure to bring some change for the parking meters. Street parking is easy and cheap.

Hubby and I like this place. It's close to our area. their products are modern and unique. they make custom lights. the staff are very helpful when we went to check it out. they totally know what they're doing. they even gave us a tour of their shop! we're so glad we finally found a local place who has great products! will definitely be back to purchase our lights
